West Asia Crisis and the Modi Doctrine

As the conflict in the Middle East continues to escalate unabated, and the US and Israel continue their ferocious campaign against Iran, the world is on tenterhooks. The broad repercussions of this raging war can be felt worldwide, from rising energy costs to the profound implications for the tourism sector. But in the midst of this latest conflagration, which has captivated global attention and headlines, India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, appears to have skilfully navigated a tumultuous environment with great ease. This is a testament to our diplomatic sagacity and the art of dealing with close allies on a plethora of issues, even though our interests diverge on the current problem that is brewing. Even though Israel and the US are acting in concert to obliterate targets in Iran and its proxies, India has skilfully demonstrated its ability to manoeuvre through this complex web and yet keep its ties intact with the Arab world. Three issues come to mind. First, t...

Bombs, Blunders, and Blowback: The Cost of Miscalculating Iran

As the evolving and fast-deteriorating situation continues to send shockwaves across the world, it is quite clear that global uncertainty will persist in the coming few weeks or months. Political commentators and analysts are closely observing these developments and many have predicted very alarming scenarios. As the hawkish rhetoric between Iran and Israel continues unabated and the fierce missile exchanges by both light up the night skies, it is highly that the recent bombings conducted by the United States (US) on the three nuclear sites — Natanz, Fordow, and Esfahan, by its formidable B2 bomber is not the end game. The repercussions are going to be felt the world over. As the recent reports suggest, the Iranian missile response in Qatar was measured and precise — as the target was only the largest military base in the Middle East — but the attack was contained. Nonetheless, it was a symbolic action. Is the ceasefire agreement ironclad? Israel certainly does not have a stellar...

India and Israel: A Bond forged in intelligence and shared threats- Ishaan Saxena ( First Published in The Pioneer)

Israel and India share common interests- Ishaan Saxena (First Published in The Pioneer)

Both India and Israel have hostile neighbors. India can take a cue from Israel in defending its borders and sovereignty Ever since the brutal and dastardly attacks on Israel earlier in October, the Indian public- especially those who are conversant with the intricacies of this Arab- Israeli conflict- have been strenuously debating what the course of action should be. The sheer intensity of the surprise attacks on the Jewish state by diabolical terrorists was shocking. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s explicit and equivocal support for Israel astonished many. The second official statement by the Government of India was a little more balanced as it underscored the importance of peaceful negotiations between Israel and Palestine.  The question is what if the country witnesses something similar in magnitude to what transpired in Israel earlier in October? People in India are no strangers to the scourge of terrorism. The gruesome atrocities inflicted by Hamas evoked mixed se...

Russia, China are forging new military alliance

The West and the world must engage with Russia to curtail its military alliance with China Lately, there has been a lot of brouhaha over Chinese President Xi Jinping’s decision to skip the G20 in New Delhi this week. This news came weeks after the Kremlin announced that President Vladimir Putin would not be attending the summit. Political commentators have viewed this development as an indication of turbulent times ahead. The Russia-China alliance is strengthening and this is a clear indicator that there appears to be a stumbling block to democratic values which much of the free world cherishes. Essentially, relations between countries are fluid and they hinge on ongoing developments. The Western alliance must realise that isolating Russia will have ramifications and the only prudent way ahead is to negotiate firmly and, in the process, make concessions to weaken the Russia-China alliance. What the West urgently requires is a paradigm shift. Recent reports about China’s ambition to est...

Long Live the Liberal Order

No matter how chaotic the world  today might look, the liberal  world order is the only way forward The recent meeting between US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Indonesia underscored the importance of the liberal international order. Both countries made a firm commitment to work together on a range of issues and emphasized the healthy spirit of competition. This development, apart from concurrent events, do indicate that although the liberal order appeared to be showing signs of fatigue, earlier this year, it has found relevance once again. In February this year, when the world was slowly emerging from the horrors of Coronavirus and its ensuing global economic disruptions, the international community found itself grappling with a monumental challenge. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine with tacit support from China reignited a recurrent theme in the international relations discourse. And how can one forget China’s spectacular ...

Don't demonise a community

Switch on the TV and all you will hear are reports about the spike in the number of Coronavirus cases. These are being linked to the congregation in  Nizamuddin A rather disconcerting communal atmosphere seems to have enveloped the entire country at a critical juncture when we all should be displaying common sense, unity and the resolve to contain the spread of the deadly COVID-19. We were on top of things till a week or two ago but now the virus seems to be spreading at a faster pace. Till now we have 4,858 confirmed cases and the deaths have spiked to 136. However, we still seem to be doing better than the developed nations with better healthcare infrastructure than us. For instance, the US has 3,67,650 cases and nearly 10,000 fatalities while Spain has 1,36,675 cases and 13,341 deaths and Italy is battling with 1,32,547 cases and has seen 16,523 deaths so far. If we were to compare ourselves to all these nations, their population density to ours and the number of cases the...
